A Model for Considering the ‘total Safety’ of the Light Passenger Vehicle Fleet
نویسندگان
چکیده
This report describes the results of research to develop and apply a comprehensive model to consider the influence of the mix of vehicle types on the total safety of the light passenger vehicle fleet in Australia. Key inputs to the model are estimates of the crashworthiness and aggressivity of light passenger vehicles in the key crash types representing the majority of crashes in which these vehicles are involved. They include crashes between two light vehicles, single vehicle crashes, crashes with heavy vehicles and crashes with unprotected road users such as pedestrians and bicyclists. The model combines these key crashworthiness inputs with measures of crash exposure of each vehicle class in the fleet mix to estimate the average injury outcome in all crashes involving the light vehicle fleet. By varying the key parameters of the model, it was possible to examine the effects on the average safety of the light vehicle fleet resulting from changes to the mix of types of vehicles in the fleet. Application of the model was demonstrated through a number of scenarios varying the mix of vehicles in the fleet by broad market group classification. Scenarios considered include natural changes in market group mix of the fleet in recent times and projected over the next 10 years, elimination of various market groups from the fleet, homogeneous fleets composed of a single market group, and fleets composed of only vehicles with the best possible safety performance in each market group. Results of applying the model to the various scenarios considered point to how the vehicle fleet mix might best be manipulated in the future to optimise safety outcomes. Safety outcomes resulting from recent current and projected future trends in vehicle fleet mix were also able to be quantified.

A New Mathematical Model for the Green Vehicle Routing Problem by Considering a Bi-Fuel Mixed Vehicle Fleet
This paper formulates a mathematical model for the Green Vehicle Routing Problem (GVRP), incorporating bi-fuel (natural gas and gasoline) pickup trucks in a mixed vehicle fleet. The objective is to minimize overall costs relating to service (earliness and tardiness), transportation (fixed, variable and fuel), and carbon emissions. To reflect a real-world situation, the study considers: (1) a co...
متن کاملA Systems Modeling Methodology For Evaluation of Vehicle Aggressivity In The Automotive Accident Environment
A systems modeling approach is presented for assessment of harm in the automotive accident environment. The methodology is presented in general form and then applied to evaluate vehicle aggressivity in frontal crashes. The methodology consists of parametric simulation of several controlled accident variables, with case results weighted by the relative frequency of each specific event. A hierarc...
متن کاملProjecting effects of improvements in passive safety of the New Zealand light vehicle fleet.
OBJECTIVES In the year 2000, as part of the process for setting New Zealand road safety targets, a projection was made for a reduction in social cost of 15.5 percent associated with improvements in crashworthiness, which is a measure of the occupant protection of the light passenger vehicle fleet. Since that document was produced, new estimates of crashworthiness have become available, allowing...
متن کاملSTOCHASTIC VEHICLE ROUTING PROBLEMS WITH SIMULTANEOUS PICKUP AND DELIVERY SERVICES
The problem of designing a set of routes with minimum cost to serve a collection of customers with a fleet of vehicles is a fundamental challenge when the number of customers to be dropped or picked up is not known during the planning horizon. The purpose of this paper is to develop a vehicle routing Problem (VRP) model that addresses stochastic simultaneous pickup and delivery in the urban pub...
متن کاملProposing an approach to calculate headway intervals to improve bus fleet scheduling using a data mining algorithm
The growth of AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) systems leads to huge amount of data about different parts of bus fleet (buses, stations, passenger, etc.) which is very useful to improve bus fleet efficiency. In addition, by processing fleet and passengers’ historical data it is possible to detect passenger’s behavioral patterns in different parts of the day and to use it in order to improve fle...
